One day remained before Miria would meet with Prince Rydin once more, when she could turn in Everett and the others and move on with her life. By taking her in and teaching her how to live with her new body, theyâd been good to her, but Everett had shown her that they were every bit as monstrous as the vampires sheâd despised in Terra Nocturne.
She wouldnât be part of it if it meant hurting innocent people.
Everett, Dez, and Gryffin were all out in the city for the night, which left Miria alone with Reina. Her very presence made the rail car an insufferable prison from which Miria was desperate to escape. She was grateful that Everett hadnât insisted on bringing her along for another night of recruiting, but if she had to sit through another of Reinaâs furious glares and exaggerated sighs, she was certain sheâd lose her mind.
Miria gathered her things and leaned forward to lace up her boots. There wasnât much she wanted to do out in Viridi, but anything had to be better than sitting around here.
Reina looked up from her nails, which sheâd been painting a vibrant shade of blue, and narrowed her eyes at Miria. âWhere are you going?â
Miria slipped on her jacket and fastened the buttons. âItâs stuffy down here. Iâm going to take a walk, get some air. I donât suppose youâd want to join me?â
Reina scoffed. âHardly.â
âRight. I didnât think so,â Miria said.
âWhy are you even here?â Reina set down the tiny brush sheâd been using to paint her nails. âEverett mentioned how upset you were about creating more vampires. Thatâs the entire reason weâre here in this city in the first place. So, why are you sticking around if you donât even want to be one of us?â
âI suppose spending time with you is just too much fun to resist,â Miria said. When that was met with nothing more than a scowl, she shrugged. âYou took me in and taught me how to live with myself after being turned and abandoned. Iâm grateful for that. Isnât that enough?â
âEnough with the bullshit act,â Reina said.
âItâs no act,â Miria said. Up until her recent trip through the city with Everett, that had been the truth. âYou can hate me all you want if it makes you feel better, though.â
âI still donât know enough about you to hate you. But I donât trust you.â Reina blew air on her nails.
âI never did anything to deserve this from you.â
âMaybe not. But we brought someone who none of us turned into our little family once before. He betrayed us, and someone I loved died for it. I wonât sit by and let that happen again.â
âIâm sorry. I didnât know.â
âLook, Iâm not going to sit here and have a heart-to-heart with you about my past. Whatâs done is done.â Reina picked up the brush and began working on her other hand.
Before her trip with Everett, Miria might have taken a seat next to Reina and told her she understood where she was coming from.
